The beauty of Bryce Canyon

On the Luce

A land of delicately carved rock spires in sunset shades, Bryce Canyon was an out-of-this-world start to my southwest US national park hopping. The park is made up of a series of amphitheatres along the edge of a plateau, filled with thousands of rock formations called hoodoos.

Readers’ photos: more wildlife from Idaho

Why Evolution Is True

Our correspondent from near Silver Creek, Idaho, sent more wildlife pictures.  You might remember his photographs of the bald eagle nest, and here are the female (presumed) with her two chicks, clearly close to fledging:

There’s also an insect photo, identified as follows:

I finally got through the 1,400+ photos from our recent trip to Peru. There were so many that I loved, so I’ll be sharing a few (or 40) each day this week if you’re interested. Throughout our trip, we were constantly mesmerized by the beautiful colors we encountered in this country – from the textiles, to the people, to the city and countryside, everywhere you look there’s vibrant color .

The Starry Nights of Florida

nomadruss in words and photos

There is much talk of our disappearing night sky, and fortunately in 2001 the National Park Service took the formal step of recognizing the night sky as a natural resource. There are still places in the Eastern US where you can find a bit of darkness, and the Everglades is one such place. One image was made on a pure night sky, the other accompanied by the glow of the moon, both in the Florida Everglades.
